Willem de Kooning, abstract expressionist, born in the Netherlands April 24, 1904 and died March 19, 1997. De Kooning was formerly trained at the Rotterdam (his birthplace) Academy of Fine Arts and furthered the training during this period assisting an art director.
His work consists of mostly abstract work full of ambiguity and interesting free associations between foreground and background. His main subjects were women though late in his career his paintings became graphic and sometimes angry.
Lyndon Johnson awarded De Kooning the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President and later he would be given the National Medal of Arts.
